Gary's Story

Please tell us about your journey to StayWell, what led you to us, where does your story begin?

"I was diagnosed with IPF, Lung disease, 4 years ago. My condition went downhill since then. In November 2023 I had to relocate to Toronto for further tests then was put on the Lung Transplant list in December 2023. Being out of province, you cannot be on the "List" unless you are within 2 hours from the hospital, Toronto General. The up rooting for the family was, to say the least, very tough. I had to have a 24/7 escort, where the family kicked in. My wife, daughter and son put their lives on hold and each shifted on/off to be with me for mental support and by my side for all my appointments. My wife Nicole had to travel back/forth as she had a home based business to still operate to support our finances for the relocation. Our very first step, which time was a factor, was to find a place in Toronto to stay."

Where did you have to relocate from? How was the journey from home to Toronto?

"We had to relocate from Newfoundland. It happened all too fast. I was on oxygen at the time of the move. I had to get doctor's forms signed my me and the doctor to be allowed to travel on Air Canada. We only had about 2 weeks before they had appointments set up for me in Toronto General Hospital, so time was not on our side. Forms were sent off to Air Canada and then we were on pins and needles waiting to be approved to travel. In the meantime, I searched frantically to find accommodations in Toronto to stay."

What were the things you found difficult? How did StayWell help?

"One of our roadblocks to start off with was to find the right accommodations in Toronto. I would advise anyone from out of province, compare apples to apples, not oranges, when looking for a spot. We had no idea how long my stay would be. I thought 3-4 months, or a short stay, but it ended up being a year. With all that being said, someone had told me about StayWell when I was looking. They had stayed in one before and were impressed. I went on their website and started looking. What I needed was a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom, cause of my condition and privacy. We needed a furnished and kitchenette suite also. I contacted StayWell and they were the most accommodating. I looked at a few places and chose the one we are at right now. Like I said before, If you compare places, prices and locations, you must reach out to StayWell first."

What were the positive aspects of your stay?

"StayWell was the place for us! It was so easy to rent, no down payment, no lease to sign, just month to month, everything by email. 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, furnished, kitchenette with full size fridge/stove, all utensils, dishes, etc, just as I requested. Pull out double couch, all utilities included, Wi-Fi, Bell cable box, A/C in living room and both bedrooms, small outside deck, easy pickup key location. The apartment is managed by Skyview Suites and if there were any issues, I would send off an email and within minutes they responded. I had a team reply back and was taken care of ASAP. I was totally amazed on the service here. There is an indoor/outdoor pool, a good size gym, enclosed underground parking if needed, at an extra cost, security desk, key fob to get in/out of the building, and your own mailbox. The prices are high everywhere in Toronto, especially close to the hospital, but if you compare places, try StayWell first!!"

Would you recommend StayWell to other patients in need of access to medical care in Toronto?
