Cathy's Story

Please tell us about your journey to StayWell, what led you to us, where does your story begin?

"A journey for a double lung transplant was not part of my plan, however, when an old childhood friend needed a support person to get on the transplant list, I felt it was what I needed to do. I myself had recently become a breast cancer survivor and knew firsthand how important a second chance is when you're staring death in the face.

We arrived in Toronto on March 23/23 from small-town in New Brunswick. We left home at 6 a.m. and drove straight through, arriving that evening around 5 p.m. My friend was diagnosed with Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency, which combined with Alpha COPD and Emphysema. Alpha-1 is a genetic condition that causes damage to the liver and/or lungs. He had COPD and it can be treated to protect the lungs, but in his case, his was too far gone, and a double lung transplant was the only option."

What were the things you found difficult? How did StayWell help?

"I found it very difficult to leave my home and family, not knowing how long this journey would take. I only packed for what I thought would be six months to a year; however, fifteen months later, we are still here. The journey itself was longer than anticipated, as when we arrived, we were told my friend was considerably overweight and would have to lose 50 lbs before he could be listed. It was then during his pre-screening tests, he had cardiac issues and went on to have 2 different cardiac catheterizations with multiple stents installed. Staywell provided us with a home close to the hospital, and we also had parking for our car. A small, beautiful condo became home and conveniently located within walking distance to anything we would need during our stay in Toronto.

We were able to come here to a completely furnished apartment and only had to bring our clothes and towels and personal items—such a relief to have that all in place when we arrived. As Canadians, we are so lucky to have a universal healthcare system that covers the cost of treatment. Staywell prices made it possible to relocate with minimal financial stress, along with our provincial program from NB monthly towards our rent.

Rent from Staywell required no income paperwork but thanks to my friend’s family, he did have to sell some items before signing the paperwork to have the family home as collateral. He was able to keep his house and soon will be able to return to that home. And also, the rebate Staywell offers at the end of the stay here will give us funds to start his new life with his new lungs. My friend had his transplant March 3, 2024, and we look forward to being with his family again soon."

What were the positive aspects of your stay?

"As a caregiver during this journey, I can tell you it is exhausting emotionally, mentally, and physically. My friend was hospitalized for 16 days consecutively, and there were times in his life I’ve seen under certain circumstances where rejection has set in, and he was not expected to make it. Having a nice safe place to come back to each night meant a lot during his post-op period. To see him now enjoying life without oxygen and truly comes from my heart, I did the right thing by putting my life on hold and helping him on this journey. Another positive note was that I was able to bring my little Chihuahua, Jaxon, along. He has kept me sane and helped manage my home sickness. Adding a reason to get outside to walk him was good therapy. Thank you so much Staywell."

Would you recommend StayWell to other patients in need of access to medical care in Toronto?
