Julie's Story

Please tell us about your journey to StayWell, what led you to us, where does your story begin?

"I first learned about StayWell through the hospital where I receive treatments. The care I require is for CRPS, which is recognized as one of the most painful diseases known to medicine. This treatment is currently the only known approach that offers some relief. That is what led me to StayWell and to seek accommodations during my journey."

Where did you have to relocate from? How was the journey from home to Toronto?

"Our journey is a long one. We live in northern Ontario, about 16 hours north of Toronto. To even begin, we must drive six hours to Thunder Bay to reach the airport, followed by a two-hour flight to Toronto. After such an exhausting trip, it makes a world of difference to know that StayWell has us looked after. One of the biggest comforts is that the condo is only about 15 minutes from Toronto Island Airport. That convenience is priceless after a very long trip. Traveling such distances is hard enough when you’re healthy—but when you’re unwell, it can be extremely difficult."

What were the things you found difficult? How did StayWell help?

"One of the greatest challenges we face is the sheer cost and effort required to travel for treatment. Downtown Toronto accommodations are very expensive, but StayWell helps reduce this burden significantly by providing affordable housing close to my appointments and the airport. Another incredible support they provide is holding my initial reservation until my funding comes through. This flexibility and understanding has been beyond helpful and deeply appreciated, because not all patients are able to pay upfront."

What were the positive aspects of your stay?

"We have now had the pleasure of staying with StayWell on two occasions while I received medical treatment at Toronto Western Hospital. Both times, our experience was excellent. Every staff member we interacted with was committed to ensuring our stay was safe, clean, and comfortable. The suites themselves were spotless and beautifully furnished, with everything we needed—from kitchen supplies to laundry facilities—so we only had to bring our personal items."

"On our last visit, we encountered a plumbing issue with the toilet. After contacting StayWell, the problem was resolved within just a few hours, which was remarkable. The professionalism, compassion, and empathy shown by the staff really stood out. Each time we’ve had to wait for our medical funding, StayWell has graciously held our reservation until payment was possible. That level of support is invaluable to patients like me."

"We especially loved staying at Qwest, one of the buildings, which has become a favorite. The rooftop terrace was a beautiful oasis in the heart of the city, with BBQs, cozy seating areas, and even a heated TV space. It offered a peaceful place to recharge during such a challenging time."

Would you recommend StayWell to other patients in need of access to medical care in Toronto?

"Yes."
