Richard's Story

Please tell us about your journey to StayWell, what led you to us, where does your story begin?

"My journey to StayWell began after I was diagnosed with stage 4 rectal cancer. The severity of my illness made it extremely difficult and exhausting to drive back and forth from my home in Barrie, Ontario, to the hospital for treatment. The long commute added unnecessary stress to an already challenging time, and I knew I needed a solution that would allow me to focus on my recovery rather than the strain of travel. That’s when I found out about StayWell, and it made all the difference in my treatment journey.”

Where did you have to relocate from? How was the journey from home to Toronto?

"I relocated to Toronto from Barrie, ON, and took the train, which is about a two-hour ride each way. While the train was a convenient option, the journey was still tiring and added extra stress to an already difficult time."

What were the things you found difficult? How did StayWell help?

"One of the biggest challenges I faced was the train schedule. The train times didn’t always align with my treatment appointments, which made getting to the hospital on time difficult. StayWell helped me overcome this by providing a fully furnished apartment near the hospital. Being able to stay so close to my treatment centre allowed me to focus on my health and recovery without the added stress of managing transportation. It made a world of difference during such a challenging time."

What were the positive aspects of your stay?

"One of the most positive aspects of my stay was the exceptional support from the StayWell staff. They were always courteous, helpful, and went out of their way to make sure I was comfortable throughout my journey. I am truly grateful for the generous opportunity provided by this organization. It made the entire experience much easier, allowing me to focus on my health without worrying about finding an accommodation."

Would you recommend StayWell to other patients in need of access to medical care in Toronto?

"Yes."
