Please tell us about your journey to StayWell, what led you to us, where does your story begin?
"I needed to go to Toronto for mitral and tricuspid valve repair surgery at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre in Toronto General Hospital. The surgery I required was complex and could not be performed in my hometown, which meant seeking specialized care elsewhere. Through this process, I was introduced to StayWell as a supportive medical housing option."
Where did you have to relocate from? How was the journey from home to Toronto?
"I came from Vancouver, where the cardiothoracic surgeons did not have the expertise in Marfan Syndrome necessary to successfully do the surgery I needed. The flight to Toronto was easy and the Staywell location was perfect."
What were the things you found difficult? How did StayWell help?
"Having a more 'home-like' place to stay for my family made things easier and less stressful. For example, being able to buy groceries and cook instead of needing to eat out meant the experience was healthier, more affordable, and allowed my family to have a calm, quiet place to be while I was in hospital, and once released from hospital. Also there were a ridiculous amount of pillows including a wedge pillow in the unit, which was actually really beneficial post-surgery when I needed to sleep in a more upright position."
What were the positive aspects of your stay?
"The home-like environment was so beneficial, as well as the lower medical rate which helped make the experience more affordable, allowing me to bring more family for support instead of relying on only one person. Had we rented elsewhere or booked a hotel room, it would not have been possible to have multiple support people. Having multiple support people ensured no one got burnt out trying to care for me, as they were able to work as a team and support each other."
Would you recommend StayWell to other patients in need of access to medical care in Toronto?
"Yes."
